Miscellanea

Running out of food we ventured to the largest of the markets in Oaxaca, Mercado de Abastos.  It is easy to get lost in this maze of vendors and booths, and had we bumped into one, a Minotaur would not have seemed out of place.  This is the place for everything!  A rooster absent of cage crowed upon our arrival, and around the corner we saw cages of fluffy bunnies, chickens, parrots, and guinea pigs. There were boxes of puppies lying like enchiladas on a plate.  I even saw a baby stowed in a box with his blanket, tucked away from the action.  Of course there is every kind of fresh food, prepared food, clothing, and goods of every type.  I struggle with wanting to take pictures of the beauty of it all without being offensive.  I made sure to ask permission before snapping away.  To be certain we were equally objects of interest.  Pat being so tall drew lots of grins, and Abe and especially Pen tolerated the extra attention and in some cases caresses.

The rest of the day felt more at ease, taking our time to just relax in the zocalo.  I even had a conversation with a woman looking for work.  She was hopeful since we understand Spanish.  We discussed work and living until the wind and rain blew us undercover for coffee and hot chocolate.
